Our beloved Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has grown remarkably over the past two decades, evolving from a niche martial art into a global phenomenon. What sets it apart from other sports and fuels its rapid growth? Its unique appeal lies in the extensive transferrable life skills, health benefits, invaluable self-defense techniques it teaches, and the inclusive community it fosters. BJJ welcomes practitioners from a wide range of diverse backgrounds, providing comprehensive benefits that cater to so many different individual needs and circumstances.
Meet Maximo—a 10-year-old warrior who faces life with sensory processing disorder - a condition where the brain struggles to process sensory information accurately. Throughout his school years, Maximo bravely battled school bullies (cowards) who consistently made his life unbearable. His struggle to make friends and fit in became so overwhelming that he reached the point where he no longer wanted to go to school. He kept his struggles bottled up inside, hidden away from his worried family, unsure how to cope with what was happening inside him. Eventually, he would explode in a whirlwind of anger and tears. His parents later finding him hidden away in his room, trying to make sense on his own of all his emotions. Maximo grappled with unrelenting sadness followed by anger, finding it difficult to even articulate let alone communicate or share his feelings with anyone.
In a desperate effort to support their child, Maximo's family searched for an activity that could provide him with some new skills, build his self-confidence, and provide an inclusive community that accepted him just as he was. Naturally, they were apprehensive about how his sensory issues would fare. Still, when his father suggested Jiu Jitsu, Maximo decided to give it a try—equal parts excited and anxious, yet determined to find a place where he could be welcomed for who he truly is.
Fast forward to just over a year, Maximo has dedicated himself to now training on the mats five to six days a week. His parents describe his journey with Brazilian Jiu Jitsu as miraculous, highlighting the pivotal moment that they realised the impact BJJ had had on his entire world. Before discovering BJJ, Maximo would resist his mum’s efforts to help him put on his school uniform every single day. The struggle really symbolising his anxiety with attending school. However, since starting Jiu Jitsu, Maximo embraced his Gi on the mats as more than just his BJJ attire; in his mind, it is his armor. Incredibly, he now sees his school uniform in exactly the same light, his armor, wearing it with a newfound sense of safety and confidence.
When we asked Maximo what changes he has noticed in his sensory processing since starting Jiu-jitsu, he said, “I don’t feel bad. I can hug or touch other people, and it is okay. I made lots of new friends at Jiu Jitsu, and I’m not sad about what other kids say about me at school anymore; I don’t care because I’m strong on the inside now. Before starting Jiu Jitsu, my school put me on a play plan, I could play only where I was told so I wouldn’t get picked on anymore, but now I play wherever I want, and if I get picked on, I walk away without any more sadness.”
On difficult days, Maximo returns home from school and practices his Jiu-Jitsu techniques in a quiet space, helping him to clear his mind before discussing the challenges from the day with his parents. A profound change from the introverted, anxious child he was once before. The techniques learned on the mats have become far more than just physical moves for Maximo; they've taught him valuable life principles and lessons that he now applies daily off the mats, too. With a renewed sense of purpose, Maximo is now enjoying being a kid, having fun, and living in the moment just like other kids around him. His newfound dreams now reach as far as the Olympics, where he hopes to support his friends on the mats one day. But with a spirit as resilient as his, we believe anything is possible for Maximo—perhaps one day, it’ll be Maximo competing on the global stage instead. The world is yours, Maximo!
In Maximo's journey, we see the true spirit of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu—a journey of overcoming obstacles, finding strength in adversity, and embracing the power within. His story inspires us all to believe that with determination and support, anything is possible on and off the mats. The Fight Never Ends.
