With breathtaking duels and a real show of technique for fans of the sport, this year’s IBJJF Jiu-Jitsu World Championship came to an end. Last Sunday, December 12th, the event rocked the Anaheim Convention Center with the finals for the adult male and female black belt. Among the events of the competition night, Felipe “Preguiça” Pena and Gabrieli Pessanha stand out, who overcame their opponents and won gold in the tournament’s absolute.
After taking the super heavyweight bronze, Preguiça had a promising campaign in the open weight division. The Gracie Barra star overcame Arnaldo de Oliveira and Max Gimenis to reach the semifinals, in which he defeated Fellipe Andrew and qualified for the final. The duel for the gold, however, did not occur due to the disqualification of Nicholas Meregali, who had already secured his place in the final but made an obscene gesture to the crowd in the middle of his duel against Victor Hugo, still in the ultra heavyweight semifinal. With no opponent, Preguiça was named absolute champion and left his belt on the mat, symbolizing a possible retirement from the competitive scene.
In the women’s division, Gabi Pessanha showed her ability and became champion at weight and open weight. In the super heavyweight semifinal, the Infight JJ athlete starred in a disputed confrontation against the feared Gabi Garcia, who in turn ended up being overtaken by the younger opponent and decided to announce her retirement from the IBJJF World Championships. In the very final, Gabi fitted a decisive sweep and guaranteed her victory over rival Yara Soares with a 2-0 score. Yara Soares, this time by a score of 8 to 4.
